one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and a hugely popular day trip among Athens visitors. Depart from our terminalfor one day trip from Athens to Delphi to explore one of the most famous archaelogical sites of Greece. The ancient Greeks chose this unique spot for their most sacred and famous Oracle, dedicated to Apollo, which influenced the fate of states and individuals for about 1000 years.Along the way, you will see the plain of Veotia and you will also pass by the city of Theva, the birthplace of King Oedipus. You will continue your Delphi day tour towards Mt. Parnassos, making a short rest stop outside the town of Levadia, to the monastery of Hosios Loukas. It is situated at a scenic site on the slopes of Mount Helicon. It was founded in the early 10th century by the hermit St. Luke whose relics are kept in the monastery to this day. You will drive then to DELPHI, known in ancient times as the “navel of the world”. Pass by Castalia Spring, visit at the archaeological site and view the monument of the Argive Kings, the treasury of the Athenians, the Athenian Stoa, the Polygonal Wall, the monument of Platea and the Temple of Apollo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and easily one of the most important digs in Europe, also famous for its oracle and Delphi museum, with it's spectacular exhibits include the frieze of the Treasury of the Sifnians, the Naxian Sphinx, the famous bronze Charioteer, originally created to commemorate a victory during the 476 B.C. Pythian Games, and many other artifacts. After lunch return to Athens via the picturesque mountain village of Arachova, built on the south slopes of Parnassus, well known for its hand-woven carpets, rugs and quilts, as well as for its wine and cheese (short stop). Driving down the mountain Parnassos and before reaching the national highway to Athens, we’ll stop again at Cheronia to see the famous “Lion of Cheronia”. The “Lion” is a marble monument erected in the battlefield by Phillip, King of Macedonia and father of Alexander the Great, to commemorate his victory there against the Athenian and Thebean armies in 338 B.C.
